I have mentioned before that my friend and writing colleague Henriette Lazaridis and I have been working for over a year now on launching a new publishing company. Well, we have gone live with our preliminary website. As Henriette said when we saw it: shit just got real! (Pardon the language.) September in France is referred to as “la rentrée,” quite literally “the re-entry” which originally referred to students and teachers going back to school, but really refers to the whole Fall phenomenon of Everything Starting Up Again. And so here we are, marking our entry into publishing.
We are beyond excited. And also daunted. But this is a big step toward doing what we really want to do: to bring about change in the industry, publish important work that, as we put it, emerges from the intersections of currents and cultures, support other authors, and build community among writers and readers. I hope you’ll take a moment to take a look at our site and what we plan to do, and maybe even subscribe to Galiot’s Substack to be a part of the process, and maybe even do so with a paid subscription so we can do this good work. It is very important to us that we be able to pay our authors and freelance staff more than decently.
Speaking of which, if you or anyone you know might be interested in freelancing for us in the areas of copy editing, design, marketing, or event planning, or if you can recommend a good bookkeeping company, or if you’d like to be a part of our crew of local ambassadors in your town/city/region, I would love to hear from you. I mean, I always love hearing from you, but now there’s extra love.
Meantime, edits are happening AGAIN on my manuscript, and due to my agent on Friday. Henriette and I are very clear on the fact that while we are moving into publishing, we are still, and always will be, writers. We are building a business model that is nimble and adjustable, so that we can reserve enough time for our own writing. The sustainability and balance we seek to build into our business applies to our own lives and careers as well.
If you’re in the Boston area on October 14th, catch me at the Galiot Press booth at the Boston Book Festival. We have lots of fun things in store.
Cheers,
Anjali
Congratulations on the launch!!!
