I don't love the situation you're in--with editors waving their hands and making your manuscript drift silently away--but I do love this piece. I love the bestowing upon you of Badass and I love the frankness here--which is also badass. I've been there, with the feeling of being ready to call it a day. And I really meant it when I did it (as I have no doubt that your friend meant it for those few minutes when she said it). But thank god I didn't quit, and thank god she didn't, and thank god you won't. Because that's who we are and what we do. We are writers. We write.
Thanks for sharing this, Anjali. I totally agree with the 12 year old who made the comment about editors/plumbers. Your book sounds wonderful, and I hope it finds the right home soon. Sending positive vibes!
Thank you, Anjali! I shared this with my writing group. It’s exactly what we needed today. Have you thought of selling “Badass Writer” t-shirts or mugs at your merch store? :)
Hi Betsy! Thanks for reading! I'm glad that this resonated with you. I'm hearing from a number of people telling me they are sharing it with their writing groups and book clubs. I really appreciate that! I think there's not enough outward acknowledgement of how hard and often crushing this all is. And I do love the merch idea!
At first I thought you were going to start this piece about how we always managed to be talking about the sex scenes in our books when the servers would come by. 😄
I am LOVING your writing Anjali!! What a fantastic storyteller you are!
I wish I had a connection at publishing house 🙏🏼🧡🙏🏼🧡
Aw, thanks, Joanna di! I really appreciate this.
May you have the tenacity to weather this stupid process and may editors come to their senses and snap you up.
That said, I'm gonna need at least a thousand more words about those drum sticks.
I'll circle back to the drums, have no fear!

Thank you, Mary! Right back at you. I hope you're managing to find writing time and inspiration.

I thought of doing that! But then I didn't want people to wonder what kinds of books we were writing.
Heh, let them wonder. 😉
